It’s common for patients to feel a bit anxious about what comes next after having their wisdom teeth removed. One patient recently told us how the uncertainty about recovery made the experience feel overwhelming. Understanding what to expect and how to care for yourself after the procedure can make all the difference in healing comfortably and quickly. At Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery, we want to provide clear guidance on aftercare to help you through every step.
Here are six important questions patients often ask about aftercare for wisdom teeth removal:
Right after surgery, you may feel groggy from anesthesia and experience some bleeding. It’s normal to have mild swelling and discomfort around the extraction sites. You’ll likely be advised to rest, keep your head elevated, and avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 – 48 hours.
Pain and swelling are common but manageable. Applying ice packs to your cheeks intermittently for 24 hours can help reduce swelling. We may also prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter options. Following your medication schedule and avoiding activities that could disrupt healing are key.
Soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soup are ideal during the first several days. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods that could irritate the extraction sites or dislodge blood clots. Also, steer clear of alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks, as these can delay healing.
Most patients see significant improvement within a week, but full healing of the extraction site can take several weeks. Swelling typically peaks around day 2-3 and then gradually subsides. Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions closely speeds up the process.
While complications are rare, you should seek prompt care if you notice excessive bleeding, severe pain not relieved by medication, signs of infection such as fever or pus, numbness lasting longer than expected, or difficulty opening your mouth. Early intervention can prevent more serious issues.
Gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water after 24 hours can help keep the area clean. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, which might dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful condition called dry socket. Maintain good oral hygiene, but be careful around the extraction sites.
At Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery, our experienced team is committed to supporting your recovery with detailed aftercare instructions and personalized guidance. We encourage open communication, so you feel confident throughout your healing journey.
