Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery is the specialist team that other dentists send their patients to for advanced expertise in areas such as bone grafting. This service, performed at our Chicago, Bartlett, Elk Grove Village, and Mount Prospect, Illinois offices, requires the unique and extensive knowledge and skill of Board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Drs Russell P. Spinazze, Mark A. Spinazze, and Eliza P. Drobny. Due to our skill and onsite technologies, we provide an array of bone grafting capabilities, three of which are spotlighted as follows.
Socket preservation is the preventative procedure on this list. This treatment stops bone loss (or resorption) from occurring in the first place. The devastating process of bone deterioration in the jaw occurs soon after teeth are extracted. It’s estimated that around 50% of the width of the alveolar bone in the jaw that normally supports the teeth is lost within the first 12 months after the removal or extraction of a tooth. Thirty percent of such bone loss occurs within the first 12 weeks! It makes sense; like other body parts, such as the muscles in your arms and legs, if you do not “use them,” then you “lose them.” The lack of stimulation from the teeth leads to the development of bone loss, which can have a tremendous negative effect on your function and appearance, and can also preclude you from getting certain types of tooth replacement (such as implant-supported crowns, bridges, and dentures). We protect the shape and density of the jawbone with a technique called socket preservation. Following an extraction, bony tissue or a bone substitute is applied to the socket or extraction site. The new bone is then covered, and this post-extraction process helps to unlock your body’s natural healing properties. As the socket heals, your jawbone stays intact and strong.
Ridge augmentation is the procedure we perform to treat a deteriorated dental or alveolar ridge. This part of the jawbone surrounds and supports the roots of your teeth. When those teeth are gone, around 30% of the alveolar ridge may be lost due to the process of resorption. You need adequate, healthy bone in the jaw to aid in rebuilding your smile with implants. Otherwise, you may not be a good candidate for this form of tooth replacement. After all, the implant is inserted in the jaw and must naturally grow into the surrounding bone. When bone deteriorates, there may be insufficient support for the implant, and it would not heal properly. With this procedure, we can get your mouth back on the path to health, which generally involves securing a bone grafting material to the area that needs to be augmented or “built-up.” This material may be derived from a donor source, synthetically, or from your own body (as an autologous graft). Once secured, a membrane is placed on top to protect the new bone. This process stimulates healing, and the graft naturally integrates with the rest of the jaw in the next several months.
Sinus augmentation or sinus lift is specifically indicated for deficiencies in the bone in the upper jaw. Due to the anatomy of the sinus area, when the upper back teeth are extracted, only a small thin layer of bone may be present that separates these empty chambers from the mouth. To support implants, the walls of the sinuses may need to be treated by effectively lifting or raising the sinus floor. This is accomplished by first elevating/lifting the membrane that lines the sinuses, and then applying donor bone material to the space underneath. As with the other grafting services mentioned here, the newly introduced bone will heal and effectively become a part of the jaw in the months afterward.
