General anesthesia … a complement to our complex and advanced treatments for utmost comfort and safety
General anesthesia is an important ally in our mission to restore the health of the structures and tissues of the mouth, face, and jaws at Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery. Specialists like Drs Russell Spinazze, Mark Spinazze, and Eliza Drobny in Mount Pleasant, Bartlett, Elk Grove Village, and Chicago, Illinois, have access to the most advanced and complementary capabilities available today. These capabilities help support the most pleasant and safe experience and optimal and predictable treatment outcomes.
What is general anesthesia?
This is defined as “deep sedation.” Dental professionals generally have access to varying levels of sedation to help patients relax. Capabilities vary depending on their qualifications and onsite technologies and tools. General anesthesia differs from other lighter forms of sedation in that it not only puts you “to sleep,” but it also induces a state whereby your brain does not respond to pain signals or reflexes. In all, general anesthesia supports a significantly depressed level of consciousness or unconsciousness. And patients do not recall their surgery or treatment afterward.
How is it done?
General anesthesia is administered mainly through an intravenous line or IV. Special precautions are taken to ensure your safety throughout treatment. For instance, your breathing, fluids, and blood pressure are monitored closely. We can also quickly correct any potential issues that arise with medicines and fluids as needed.
Do I need to prepare for general anesthesia/Sedation?
Yes! We will review everything you need to do before and after well before treatment. Notably, it is imperative to refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least six hours before your visit. It is also essential for you to arrange reliable transportation to and from our office. Your driver must accompany you and remain at the office throughout the procedure before taking you home. This is a “must” because deep sedation and general anesthesia are associated with lingering sleepiness and confusion. So, it also goes without saying that you should avoid driving anything, including professional equipment or machinery, after your surgery.
At Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery, we perform many complex treatments, which are often multifaceted or lengthy. As such, we rely on general anesthesia to ensure the safest and most optimal treatment experience at our four Chicagoland offices. We also maintain affiliations with many hospitals in the area. Our patients have considerable trust that their treatments will be held to the highest standards of safety and quality.
