Demystifying orthognathic surgery: FAQs about corrective jaw procedures to support aesthetics, healthy function
As a specialty center, Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery has access to advanced expertise and technologies to perform complex procedures that cannot be found at other dental professionals’ offices. From our offices in Mount Pleasant, Bartlett, Elk Grove Village, and Chicago, Illinois, we can perform orthognathic surgery to correct imbalances associated with how the teeth and jaws fit together.
What does “orthognathic” mean?
“Ortho” refers to “straight” or “an upright position.” “Gnathic” is a reference to the jaws. So, the term “orthognathic” literally refers to straightening or repositioning misaligned jaws. It is a form of corrective jaw surgery that both enhances the appearance and profile of the face, while also ensuring that the teeth are positioned correctly for full and proper function.
Why would I need orthognathic correction?
You may benefit from our surgical expertise if you have an improper bite or the opposing teeth in the upper and lower jaws do not make contact as they should when you bite down or close your mouth. Or, the jaws themselves may not be positioned correctly. Since the jaws develop gradually, sometimes the upper and lower jaw may not grow in sync. They may develop at different rates. When this occurs, chewing, speech, and other functions can be compromised. Likewise, such imbalances can lead to aesthetic concerns and affect long-term health and well-being. Additionally, certain birth defects and injuries to the jaw can lead to the need for corrective surgery.
Why can’t I just have orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic appliances such as braces are limited in their capabilities. They can be appropriate for correcting bite-related problems when only the teeth are involved. However, if the jaws are to blame for misalignment, then orthognathic surgery to reposition them may be the best option. It is essential for our team to evaluate for issues such as persistent problems with chewing, biting, and swallowing. Individuals who are good candidates for surgery may also have chronic jaw or TMJ pain, a noticeably protruding jaw, breathing problems (including sleep-disordered breathing like obstructive sleep apnea), and digestive issues.
How do you treat patients with orthognathic surgery?
While every patient differs, all treatment plans generally start with a consultation. During this visit, we will perform a thorough evaluation with x-rays. We encourage you to ask our specialists, Drs Russell Spinazze, Mark Spinazze, and Eliza Drobny, any questions concerning treatment. Techniques vary, but if we determine that you could benefit from corrective jaw surgery, Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery will work loosely with your general dentist, orthodontist, and other members of your care team. Together, we can determine and secure the healthiest positions for your teeth and jaws – the “posture” that results in a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and the lasting function that supports your overall health and wellness.
