As specialists, our team has acquired considerable wisdom in staying ahead of and resolving problems associated with the “third molars,” better known as wisdom teeth. At the offices of Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery in Chicago, Mount Prospect, Elk Grove Village, and Bartlett, Illinois, Board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Drs Russell P. Spinazze, Mark A. Spinazze, and Eliza P. Drobny, can help you to avoid complications related to how these back-most teeth develop. The three approaches listed below highlight how we address the pain and stop further damage with proactive and skilled extraction.
Intense pain, pressure, swelling, and other problems with the last teeth to develop in the mouth do not have to be a foregone conclusion. We partner with some of the top dentists in the area. They send their valued patients to us when assessing these molars during regular exams or checkups. We can accurately evaluate the positioning of/how these teeth are erupting or developing in the jawbone at any time, with or without a referral. Not all wisdom teeth become impacted or trapped in the bone; however, many of these molars require extraction. By the time they develop (usually in our late teens and early 20s), there is often inadequate room in the mouth for them to come in properly. They may erupt or grow in at angles, and it is this inability for the teeth to break through the gums properly that can result in many hard-to-ignore symptoms. We can avoid these often distressing problems by detecting issues with your wisdom teeth early and then doing something about them, such as extracting or removing them.
As specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery, we have the knowledge, experience, and onsite capabilities to safely and predictably treat all patients. Extraction is largely a less invasive and extensive procedure when detected and addressed proactively. However, if we wait for symptoms of impaction to arise, your root systems may be longer, and the jawbone more dense. This occurs as we mature and transition to adulthood. While we are more than equipped to resolve even the most complex and challenging “cases,” it is largely advised to extract or remove potentially troublesome teeth before complications from impaction (such as gum infections, cysts, and crowding or damage to neighboring teeth) become a real threat. Proactive care is associated with fast, predictable healing and superior outcomes compared to those who wait until their root systems and jawbone have developed further. Whatever the case may be, we can support your safety and comfort with general anesthesia and IV sedation. Our approaches help to ease any pain you may be experiencing in the short term and support your sustained oral health and function over the longer term.
Associates for Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery reviews everything to do and to expect before, during, and after your procedure. Post-care is a shared responsibility between you as a patient and our team. Adhering to all instructions we provide helps avoid any recovery-oriented complications, notably including “dry socket.” This painful complication can be avoided by refraining from drinking through a straw, smoking, vaping, spitting, and other behaviors or habits that involve suction. These behaviors can either prevent the formation of or dislodge the blood clot that develops following extraction. You need this natural protective barrier to prevent infection and to allow the wound to heal properly.
Of course, if you have any questions about instructions or any concerns arise during your recovery, we need to hear from you!
