At Associates For Oral, Maxillofacial & Implant Surgery, LTD, patients can find clear guidance on ridge augmentation in Mt. Prospect, Elk Grove Village, Bartlett and Chicago, Illinois. This bone grafting procedure helps rebuild the jaw where a tooth has been lost, setting the stage for long-term oral health and stable tooth replacement.

About Ridge Augmentation Treatment

Ridge augmentation restores the natural shape and volume of the alveolar ridge after tooth loss, trauma, periodontal disease, or long-standing denture wear. When a tooth is removed, the socket can collapse and narrow. Without support, this area may not be ready for a dental implant or may affect the fit of a bridge or denture.

There are two common approaches. Ridge preservation, sometimes called socket preservation, is performed right after tooth extraction to limit early bone shrinkage. Delayed ridge augmentation is done months or years later to rebuild a site that has already thinned. Both options use bone grafting materials and, at times, protective membranes to encourage your body to form new bone.

Benefits of Ridge Augmentation

  • Improves bone volume for dental implant placement.
  • Helps create a more natural gumline and smile contour.
  • Supports better fit and comfort for dentures or bridges.
  • Stabilizes adjacent teeth by reinforcing thin bone.
  • Reduces the need for more complex grafting later.

How Ridge Augmentation Works

Planning starts with an exam and imaging, often including a 3D cone beam scan, to map bone width and height. On the day of treatment, anesthesia or sedation is used for comfort. Our oral surgeons will then prepare the site and place bone graft material into or onto the ridge. Grafts may be autograft (your own bone), allograft (donor bone), xenograft (animal-derived), or synthetic alloplast. A barrier membrane or small fixation device may hold the graft in place while it heals. The gum tissue is then sutured closed.

Over several months, the graft guides new bone growth. Once healed, the area can often accept a dental implant with improved stability. For some patients, a minor secondary contouring procedure may be recommended to refine the shape before implant placement.

Your Ridge Augmentation Experience

Before the procedure, you will review medical history and medications, receive instructions for eating and drinking if IV sedation is planned, and discuss home care. After treatment, expect mild to moderate swelling for 48 to 72 hours, temporary bruising, and soreness that improves with prescribed medication. A soft diet, saltwater rinses, and gentle brushing keep the area clean as it heals.

Most grafts need three to six months to mature, though healing time for ridge augmentation varies based on the graft size and your overall health. Tobacco use and certain systemic conditions can slow healing. Follow-up visits check progress and help plan the next steps, including dental implant placement when appropriate.

When Ridge Augmentation Is Recommended

  • When a tooth socket is missing bone walls after extraction.
  • When the ridge is too narrow or short for dental implant preparation.
  • When long-term denture wear has thinned the jawbone.
  • When cosmetic concerns call for better gum and tissue contours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ridge Augmentation

No. Some sites have enough healthy bone for immediate implant placement. When bone is insufficient, a bone graft after tooth extraction or delayed augmentation creates the support implants need.

Common options include your own bone, donor bone, animal-derived mineral, or synthetic materials. The choice depends on site needs, biology, and your treatment plan.

Most patients need three to six months before implants or final restorations. Smaller grafts may heal faster, while larger reconstructions can take longer.

Local anesthesia numbs the area, and sedation options can be used. Soreness is typical for a few days and is managed with medication, cold compresses, and rest.

Yes. Socket preservation places graft material into the socket immediately after the tooth is removed, reducing early bone loss and helping maintain ridge shape.

All surgery has risks, including infection, graft exposure, delayed healing, or the need for additional grafting. Careful home care and follow-up reduce these risks.

Follow your instructions closely. Avoid smoking, keep the area clean with gentle rinsing, eat soft foods, and do not disturb the surgical site while it heals.
